Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of exposure to graphic health warning labels on cigarette packs on smoking attitude among adolescents.
Methods: This study used the data of 62,276 subjects which were participated in the 13th (2017) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. We conducted frequency analysis, chi-square test and multinomial logistic regression analysis using SPSS 24.0 Program.
Results: After implementing the graphic health warning labels on cigarette pack on December 23 2016, about 70% of students had seen graphic health warning labels during the past one month. Among adolescents who reported experience a graphic health warning labels, recognition of negative health effects of smoking was higher in non-smokers (aOR=5.12, 95% CI=4.68-5.60) than current smokers. Also, non-smokers (aOR=10.16, 95% CI=9.28-11.11) showed a significantly higher motivation not to smoke than current smokers.
Conclusion: Graphical health warning labels on cigarette packs motivate adolescents not to smoke, particularly among non-smokers. Therefore, this study suggested that development of an effective pictorial warning is needed for smoking cessation promotion and change of attitude toward smoking for youth smokers.
